Re: A few from yesterday - Urban and derelict!

Thanks for your comments Rob, all appreciated.

I can see what you mean about the first image, it does have confusing content I guess. Composition wise though I was quite pleased as I managed to get both elements of the image on the thirds it's just that maybe they don't actually go together. The sun was a right pain in that shot as it really was in an awkward place, thus the blow out top right which I excentuated in the harsh b&w conversion.

I also agree with you about the railway image not really saying 'derelict' (maybe I was a little excited about the latter images and gave the thread a slightly misleading title) There isn't much at the train station to suggest derelict, in fact there isn't really a station there, just a platform. It was a good opportunity to get down low without fear of being run over by a train though. There are some others of that location im my Flickr stream.

I chose to do a selective colour on the Grit image because it needed lifting a little from what was a fairly 'mundane' shot. I liked the lines of the brickwork at the back and the simplicity of the image as a whole. The background, apart from the lines, was pretty bland anyway thats why I chose to desaturate and to highlight the yellow bin to give a stark contrast in colour. Again, I left the bin on the third for compositional reasons.

I have already said that the door shot was my favorite of the day and I took a number of images at that location. The PS work was designed to give a low key, morbid type of feel to it and in part I think this has worked. I might have another play with it and see what a further curves adjustment will do to the image as a whole.

I took a number of images of plants growing in and along walls as I liked the contrast in colours. Again, the PS work was aimed at giving it a subdued feel, highlighting the rusty downpipe whilst retaining the green of the weed. I must add that this image didn't actually have that much done to it, just a levels adjustment and a slight desaturate.

I appreciate all comments and will never 'get the hump' just because someone has a different view. All of these comments are important as they help others to 'grow and learn' about the art of photography. I'm learning very quickly that personal opinions are very different, but all of equal value
