as said if you can get along to the venue before the event and find out where you will be allowed to position yourself,.
the d50 is really good in low light,. if budget is limited you might want to consider a 50mm 1.8 if that will get you close enough,. otherwise perhaps an 85 1.8 - though as usual their 1.4 counterparts will also be nice..
