Yeah.. what they said. I've used a few different cameras that have digital zoom. None have ever been all that clean when on a tripod. They're less impressive when hand held. Chances are, you'll be better without the digital zoom.
Of course, there's always the other way about it. Throw your camera on a tripod.. do a digital zoom shot on whatever you choose as a test subject, and then as close of a lens zoom as you can. Compare results..make your decision from there.
