Fine until you come up against the planners! Then it's
"Yes we have a policy of supporting alternative energy" but
"No you can't have planning permission"

My parents, always been keen to utilise solar panels but have had planning permission turned down. Reason? In a conservation area in Peak District - despite the only people who can see them (no, really!) being inbound @ 3,000m to Manchester Airport! Of course the planners haven't been on a site visit - we wouldn't want to disturb them now, would we?
