Hello newbie here needing some help on the interfit ex150

Hi all Dave here
I'm fairly new to photography and have just purchased a canon 400d with 18-55, and 90-300 and also got the nice battery grip so im pleased with the way it looks and feels. I also bought an interfit ex150 home studio flash kit to try out some portrait shots. I set it up but am not really pleased with the shots i took.

Im seeking your kind help

Could someone give me a rough set up on it, ive got a blacked out room no outside lighting coming in and ive set the background up could do with a few tips

how far from the background should i place the subject (now bored girlfriend) and roughly how far from the (now bored girlfriend) should the lights be?

do i leave the modeling lights on when shooting?
roughly what exposure and appature should i be looking at?

I hope im not being to pushy asking these questions and can appreciate that every situation is different but i thouht that having a blacked out room then things should have gone well but they didnt. If any of you guys/girls could give me a few pointers i would be most gratefull.

Thanks for now

Davetherave

ps anyone wanting to come round and photograph the now bored girlfriend and actually show me is more than welcome i live not far from Liverpool
