I've found that with shots like this - the simpler the composition the better - by that I mean the the fewer elements in the shot the more focus can be on the real subject - the feather in this case. So, removing the twig is justified here. Another thing that worked to your advantage is the wet rocks - this shot would have looked entirely different had the scene been dry. All in, nice shot.

Like the additional color in the leaf Mark was able to reveal - dead leaves are really tough to make attractive unless you are going for their texture - so drawing out what color remained was a good move. The texture of the feather in your original is the better of the two - again the feather is the subject.

Nice effort.
