The History brush in Photoshop 7 onwards allows you to paint through from a previous stage in the "history" of your actions in editing an image. It defaults back to the 'open" and you have to chose a setting after any crop from the history listing. It is very flexible and had all the blending modes of layers so you can use it as an excellent way to lighten shadows selectively or in the case above paint in colour over what seems a black and white sketch. . . . .It really does what it says on the bottle!
