The beauty of this tool is that you can use al the blending modes you have in layers as well as adjusting the opacity. Set the stage in the history palate to where you want to go back to by chosing the history brush and then clicking on the stage in "history". A good example is to use the "screen" mode at about 15-20% opacity to lighten shadows - you can by adjusting the brush size and softness be very selective. In the same way "overlay" at about the same setting seems to give a richness of colour and sharper appearance. More dramatic effects by using the likes of "colour burn". The "darken" mode can be useful in taking the edge off a blown highlight - won't bring back detail lost but not glaring out of the image. Worth having a play.
