I'm not a portrait/person snapper but agree whatever you did is 'too much' and unnatural.I would be tempted just to lighten the face a wee bit and somehow try to add a catchlight to the eyes.But,as suggested,a reflector of some sort would have thrown some light back into the face.I quite often used a white polly bag when attempting close ups as I always had one in my bag and it never made the results any 'worse'
