Question Flash compensation ??

I have recently bought an SB600 for my D50 and was messing about with it at the weekend. I was trying some outdoor portraits and leaving the flash on iTTL, this was putting out too much light on the persons face. Am I right in thinking that pressing the combination of the flash and exposure buttons with the dial wheel turns down / up the power of the flashgun. With a setting of -1.0 I was getting better results. Was I doing the right thing ??
