I'd advise buying some photo mag's to scout thru their reviews. I think Digital Camera Magazine do a monthly Camera Shopper (can't remember the correct name of it). Then start to narrow down your choices to a short list before settling on the right model for you. I fully recommend the Nikon D50 as an entry level DSLR + great for getting started with DSLR - although few are selling these new anymore - there are plenty of 2nd hand ones around. Otherwise the D40, or if you want to go beyond entry level then the D80, or my personal favourite the D200.
As Graham said, work around your particular needs + the type of photography that you do. Nikon DSLR's are also reputed to have great colour rendition BTW.
