Nikon user here, so I can't answer any Canon-specific questions, but I do have the answer to one of your questions
The nifty fifty, 50mm 1.8 doesn't produce any distortion, and would be an excellent lens to photograph your wife's paintings IMO. BTW welcome to pixalo
