Not a Nikonian I'm afraid, but I can guess that your 70-300 will not give autofocus with a 2x teleconverter. The TC will add two stops to the effective maximum aperture - f/5.6 will become f/11 - and I can't see any AF system liking that because there won't be enough light for it. You should still be able to focus manually though.
