Filter problem

Just recently bought a Sigma 18-50 F2.8 lens which has a 72mm thread. I bought an adapter so that I could use my existing Cokin square filter holder. When I used it at the weekend I was seeing vignetting in the corners when the lens was at 18mm (with the circular polariser in the holder). I never has this issue when used on my 18-50 kit lens, I'm presuming its due to the wider glass on the front.

Is there a way around this, or do I need to buy a dedicated polariser before attaching the cokin holder on the end.
