For the best bangs-per-buck, you'll find the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II quite hard to beat - you can get them for around £60 and they are really great for low light shooting.

By the way, when people say 'faster lens', it generally means a lens with a large maximum aperture (i.e. a small f-number) - so anything f/2.8, f/1.8, f/1.4, etc - are considered fast. Don't confuse this with fast-focusing lenses which have special motors and electronics to enable quicker and quieter focusing. Canon calls it's fast focusing lenses 'USM' (for Ultrasonic Motor). You can get a fast lens with slow focus and a slow lens with USM. Generally USM only helps the usability and not image quality.
