Maybe I to can get something more than a dark (or very very burnt) shot.
As a side question (if you don't mind), how did you select that exposure?
Set it to AV and take a reading of the darkest and brightest spot, then select an average and bracket? (I'm just guessing here though as I usually shoot in bright daylight.)
