What they don't do in Sheffield any more is have the Rag Day Parade and Boat Race. The former involved dressing up floats and people and racing at high speed down T'Wicker. The latter required you to make a 'boat' for less than 50p and then 'sail' along the River Don which, in the early 1970s, was like paddling through a sewage works. The winner was the last one to catch cholera.
I have memories of running down T'Wicker pushing a pram containing a rather overweight compatriot, until one of the wheels fell off and I was projected at high speed over the top.
For some reason they had to stop all that because of health & safety concerns.
