I like that picture too, with the contrasty and natural colours against a very blue sky.
The effect wanted, I suppose, is quite not what one wants with "Orton" because it is, as you mentioned, "full of subjects".
I think a single subject (a flower, a car, a ring ... etc.) at close range or a far away "subjects" (such as your corn field, a distant forest, even mountains) would do the trick; one rule I am applying is to try to contain the said subject so that it doesn't "move". Then, always using the tripod for exactness, I shoot first with an out-of-focus effect; with this you can control how much of the background will be blurred; then I take the next shot in focus.
I am still experimenting with this technique ... amount of exposure, distance, f/stop differential between the first and second shot, etc ...
Well, that is it for now ... snowstorming here and gotta go for an errand at the friendly local hospital.
