Thanks for all the comments, all helpful in different ways.
Boofers, I think the lack of 'glow' is simply down to not letting it be over-exposed. This was not too difficult simply because the sun was very low and being naturally filtered and so wasn't as intense as it would have been if higher in the sky.
Mark, do you not feel the figure and the fishing rods are well-defined enough to see clearly what is happening? I deliberately went for the darker silhouette simply because I felt there WAS enough definition for them to be clear. I felt that the lower legs of the man, for example, were being 'seen' by the brain because it knows what is there. By cutting off some of the black area, I think it would look very strange, as though the guy had stumps instead of legs (I know you were not suggesting a crop). Interesting point this one, anyone else got any views on it?
Graham, I entirely agree that ideally I'd have prefered a degree of separation between the figure and the rods. I was actually standing quite a distance from the man and using a telephoto lens. To move sideways sufficiently for there to be a real difference I would have needed to move quite a long way and I really needed to just keep shooting and see what I got. I would definitely have prefered a small gap though for sure.
MB, I am not sure I am with you with regards the crop you are talking about but feel free to pimp it and show us what you mean
Thanks all, I appreciate you taking time to give your thoughts.
Cheers,
Rob
