Yes - and no! True mono just means having no colour - other than white, black and grey, of course.

Most digital cameras have a setting to take mono photographs, but it is better to take your pictures in colour and the convert them to mono using software.

Why? Because the greyscale the camera will do for you will only have 256 shades. A colour image will have millions of shades, so converting photos in software will result in your image having many more shades (even if it won't have millions like the colour shades) so will be smoother where tones change more subtlely.

If you shoot with the mono settings your camera will be 'throwing away' much of the image.
