That used to be my method of choice with my Fuji 602Z - the optional add-on lenses had a tube adapter which, when screwed on, completely enclosed the lens. Stick UV filter on front and poly bag and elastic bands made for a water/dustproof cover. Sadly my dSLR lens rotated and moved so that was never going to work

Down side to all the poly solutions (including my Rain Hood) is that it tends to get very humid inside the container (you'll inevitably get some moisture inside - on hands probably) which isn't good - so you need to keep an eye on that

BTW, I use just a chamois to lay on top of camera/lens in damp/drizzly conditions. It stops drips forming (which are the big no-no), so protects the camera well enough
