yep i ha e used this technique a fair bit and you are right it definately needs the "right" image....... im not sure but i think it has been slightly over done in your image, and has left the sky burnt out and lacking detail.
It is a nice image with lovely colours but i would reduce the opacity of hte blurred layer even more than u have already done.
