Having read a bit about the grip, I'm not sure the grip is really required unless you either want:
1. the duplicated controls for portrait mode shooting; or
2. the extra fps the grip with en-el4 batteries gives you
The battery life on the D300 is reputed to be twice (or more) that of the D200 - with plenty of people saying they can shoot all day on a single battery.
I'll probably get one eventually, but will wait for the price to drop quite a bit before I do.
