Compared to compacts, DSLRs are far more subtle with their in-camera sharpening. Most shots benefit from some post-processing. This can mean that shots look a bit disappointing when viewed in an image viewer.
I use something called
BreezeBrowser to look through my images. It's got the usual niceties like displaying EXIF data, focus points etc but the killer thing for me is the HQ mode, it has to be seen to be believed. When you first install it's turned off by default but you can toggle it from the menu or by pressing Ctrl-Q
