Ahh, then I'd definitely recommend 40D - no particular advantage to the S5 improved dynamic range (as you can control the lighting) and, as Graham says, the Liveview on the LCD would be a major benefit. Again there's no benefit to a longer reach lens, so reckon the 100/105 mm would suit well (closer, using a 50mm, and you may find equipment is blocking the light)
