They didn't do colour in those days.
That's why old fogeys like me have a different outlook on modern mono. We had no choice in our yoof, and when colour photography became accessible it was a whole bright new world - like going from b/w TV to colour.
That's not to say there's no place for mono in photography today, but I bet Ansel would use colour if he was still alive.
