Here's an example, using Noise Ninja on my Sigma SD10, taken a couple of years ago

I'd read the dire warnings about noise on the SD10 so had avoided going above ISO800 'til one day I thought I'd give it a try - and made it more of a trial by shooting into bright light so creating dark shadows.

Needless to say, I never really worried about noise from that day onwards (and have had far worse detail-destroying noise on my 350D at ISO400!)

In the upper you can see some noise in the top, gone in the bottom after NN - both have the same NN sharpening applied (I use NN to sharpen all my web images)
