It's an interesting method that I've seen done in lots of different ways and this one has worked nicely. It looks a bit like looking into the front of a lens so as photographers it would certainly make a connection.

Overall, I think pictures like this need to have some sort of purpose behind them and not simply a 'special effect' so it's important to think about what the picture is saying. Even abstract art usually has some form or purpose, though not all. Sometimes it is merely the juxtaposition of lines, curves and angles that form the purpose and that could be said here with the straight lines forming curves as they twist.
