I think most rechargeables will not charge if they are allowed to go completely flat. Years ago at work, we used to use torches with NiCd's, and if they went too low they would not accept a charge and had to have the batteries changed.

Begs the question how do the makers get a charge into them in the first instance? I heard that they hit them with a ZAP to get them going, but not a clue as the the voltage/current.
