I've got A2 prints from my D70s that look great.

Not sure if the D40 sensor is any different from the D70s. They are both 6MP and I doubt there would have been a different/newer sensor of the same resolution. The new sensor was in the D40x, which, of course, was much higher resolution.

I'd guess that the IQ in both cameras will be the same. The D70s could be deemed to be a better camera if it has features that the D40 lacks, and will be useful to you.
