I think it's partly the 50/50 composition which you mention.

I also think that you shot it a bit too low down. Thus being that the converging lines of the slipway, pointing to the middle, don't have as much draw to the eye as they should.

I would personally try shooting this from slightly higher up, so I can still include the foreground detail but let the perspective bit leading off into the distance, do it's work.

If that makes sense?
