I think it WILL work in b&w, but without the effects. From here it just looks far too soft,with no detail to catch the eye. I'd like to see the image without the effects and a bit of sharpening. Adding grain to an image like this has just served to smudge the fine detail and I don't feel that it adds anything to the image. I think you could produce a nice, contrasty, stark image from the original, especially with a bit of contrast sharpening.
Please keep in mind that this all my opinion and I like my contrast in images, especially b&w ones. I also think that grain has it's place, but in photo's that have large areas of even tone.
Sorry if I sound harsh, but it's just my opinion out of many so should be taken with a large pinch of salt!
