Did not realise that you had a 35mm f1.8 and yes syncing flash in daylight can cause issues as you have found. Your camera also won't go under ISO200 which does not help.

The longer the focal length of the lens, the narrower the depth of field at any given aperture, so for instance an 85mm f1.8 will have a narrower DoF than your 35mm f1.8 and longer focal lengths will, as you have found, also have narrower DoF even at smaller apertures. While you would not have any distance problems in the open, long lenses do put a lot of distance between you and your subject.
