that's a slightly different issue. that's down to nikon (stupidly imo) encrypting the white balance part of the NEF file in the D50. It means that there are very few programs available that properly supports D50 NEF files. The reason for that is developers have to jump through hoops to get access to the Nikon NEF API. Little prole dudes like me have no chance what so ever of getting near it...
The Adobe Camera Raw handles the files slightly differently from the nikon plugin. One thing I noticed is ignores all the camera settings at the time of shooting (e.g. saturation, sharpening etc) and does it's own thing. The effect of this is the image you see on the LCD (or PictureProject) bears absolutely no relation to what you get with Adobe Camera Raw.
Spent many a day trying to figure that one out.
You can use your Nikon PS plugin which is buried on the CD that came with the camera. Just search the CD for "Nikon NEF Plugin.8Bi". When u find it, dump it in: -
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\File Formats\
Assuming a default install.
I've recently just switched back to the nikon plugin because it's much faster
