I agree with you on the thumbnails, they do take up a lot of room. however you could use a dropdown to navigate to a specific picture - it takes much less room. downside is it looks kinda clunky. you can get round that by skinning it but in my experience that is an art in itself.
Certainly splitting the gallery into sections would help with the click fatigue
