New TFT monitor problem - MAC help required

Wondering if anyone can help... My trusty ol' 23" Formac CRT monitor blew-up the other day when i plugged it in (dodgy Spanish electric), and i had to go out and buy myself a cheap monitor quickly....I chose the Samsung Syncmaster 913v which i am actually very happy with (it is sharp nice and bright but no too much so, and has been calibrated well)......However, in certain areas on some of my images it seems i have what i would call 'Colour break-up' or bad 'colour smoothing' (where a vivid colour goes blocky as it gradiates into another colour). Not sure of an exact technical term because i have never encountered it before. It only shows up on my monitor when i have checked on others the colours are fine.
Does anyone know of a setting i may have over-looked?? I am using an Apple Mac G4 OS X, is there anyway of checking how many millions of colours i am seeing or at what depth i am seeing images in? This is an area i have never looked into before because normally i have had everything set up just right, and i did think myself fairly mac savvy.
