It may very well be possible to use your polariser with your compact providing it is bigger than your lens (and i would be very surprised if it wasn't). Just hold it up infront of the lens keeping all fingers and filter edges out of view. May be a bit hit and miss with old film compacts but with digital ones especially the new ones with no viewfinders you can see if it has worked instantly.
