Good points raised here Graham. For me I think I there are 3 general processing paths.
1. To reflect the actual scena as you saw it. Perfect for ones own collection
2. To reflect the scene as you saw it with some tweaks to improve the shot.
3. To amend the image for maximum impact , for larger audience
I must admit I process my Mono's with option 3 in mind, apart from shots of my family where I will usually drop back to #2
