I prefer #2 as he is not smack bang in the centre of the frame, I think it would be improved if you had composed the shot with him on the right looking back into the frame though.
I think #2 would also look great in b+w.
The focus on #1 looks a little soft but is clear and crisp in #2. Exposure on both shots looks very good only a little bit bright in his hair in #1.

If he were my son, then I'd be delighted with both of them.
