Joe, sorry I missed your question about a monopod: yes, I absolutely would recommend one. They are not expensive, even for a good solid one but they can make a huge difference. A tripod is great when you have the time and inclination to get it all set up and so forth but a monopod can be so much more user-friendly. Go out on a walk with your camera and the monopod becomes a walking staff! Put a ball-head on it, needn't be anything expensive but make sure it is strong enough to lock the camera in position with no more than a half-turn with the screw.

I never go out for walks and things without my monopod and think every outdoor photography should consider one a necessity.
