It works because the lad has his face turned sideways so we can see him making eye contact with your granddaughter. The lighting is a shame as there are quite a few burnt out spots that detract from the image but capturing the moment is more important that capturing a picture to go on the wall and this has done that. There is a certain cuteness about them holding hands, even if it is only to feel safer up on their fathers' shoulders.
Definitely right not to run ahead, the picture from the front would have been with them aware and it would not have been the same shot at all.
