Depending on where you're located there might be a London Camera Exchange store nearby (they're not just in London, but not every city has one). Their prices for second-hand kit aren't as good as eBay, but you can still make a decent saving, and you can return it if it's not up to scratch.

Lenses don't depreciate hugely, but also they don't generally go wrong - if you're on a tight budget you can often get a superior lens for the same cash, if you're prepared not to be the first person to mount it to a camera.
