Image Sizes

We are pleased to announce that, as from now, images for posting in Pixalo may have a maximum file size of 300 kilobytes.

This applies to images posted in the Photo Sharing, Photo Critique, Photo Manipulation and other forums
and also for images posted in the Members Galleries and in Competitions.


Image size limits remain at 1000 pixels on the longest side.

We hope this allows members a little more flexibility
with their image posting.

Wow interesting! I like, although would you mind explaining what led to this decision? I haven't really heard anyone complain!

One of our members contacted us to ask if the 200kB limit was really necessary, and we decided that it wasn't. There has to be a limit, and we thought that 300kB would give more scope for better quality in the larger sizes.

There is a caveat though - the larger the image and the better the quality, the more susceptible it is to image theft. So the higher limit is there if you want to use it, but there's no obligation!

I think this is a good decision and will help when uploading a more detailed image that is harder to compress down without losing a lot of quality whilst still keeping the size low enough to open fairly quickly as most people will be using broadband.

That's presumably not a problem (I'm sure the Crew thought it out) but it's worth noting that members will use up their individual storage limits quicker if we upload all our images at 300kb

Yes and no. We have also stopped the gallery from automatically resizing any pictures larger than 800pix and it's now set to display all shots at the size they are uploaded at. This prevents duplicates (a medium one at 800pix and the uploaded one at up to 1000pix) from taking up additional gallery space. For the members who were uploading shots at larger than 800pix in size this change will mean that they should still be able to upload about the same total amount of pictures.

It was the best solution we could implement to give you the biggest benefit with the least negative impact.

It will use more of Pixalo's bandwidth, yes. However our current bandwidth usage is well within our planned and projected quotas.
