Added EOS 5D MII to my tests

A Few months ago I made a comparision of the basic image quality of the 1D2, 5D, 20D, 40D and 50D :-

http://www.pixalo.com/community/came...50d-28845.html

As no one gave me a 5D MkII to test, I bought one. I carried out the test in the same way but concentrated my comparison with the 5D and 50D. For JPEG images the 5D2 looked a little sharper than the 50D followed by the 5D as expected from the pixel count. While none of these cameras had any significant noise at 100 ISO, the 5D2 was slightly cleaner. As the ISO was set to 800 then 3200, the 5D2 remained the least noisy but the 50D had significant noise particularly at 3200 ISO. For Raw files at 100 ISO there was little to choose between the 5D's other than the 5D2 is sharper due to pixel count. Although the 50D looks a little sharper than the 5D it is significantly more noisy. At both 800 ISO and 320 ISO the 5D2 is the least noisy by a small margin though it sharpness advantage over the 5D is almost lost by 3200 ISO. The 50D is very noisy at 3200 ISO.

Overall, it appears that Canon has achieved a very good balance between image sharpness and noise at the various ISO ranges for the 5D2. The performance is really quite impressive at high ISO's. I rarely used my 20D above 200 ISO but I will be quite happy to regularly use the 5D2 at 400 or even 800 ISO routinely now. My tests were only concerned with basic image quality and takes no account of other features or price all of which should be considered in any selection process. My initial early reaction to other aspects of the Camera is that I really like to new menus and controls. I have already found live view and its focusing in manual advantageous even though I originally had little interest in Live View.

Would I recommend a 5D owner upgrade to a 5D2? If you are just interested in image quality, I would not think that it is worth upgrading particularly if you had other items you wanted (e.g. a new lens). However, if you are very keen to have the new features (there are quite a few), could sell the 5D, you might well be tempted for a good price.
