Anyone has experience with a Nikkor DC lens?

Hi there is a used Nikkor 105mm f2D DC lens on the market right now and I am tempted to get it.

Has anyone used the DC lense?

Is the Boken that much better than say a Nikkor 85mm f1.8D or a 1.4D?
Has anyone used it in studio along with strobes? Does the DC come into play AT ALL when you are using strobes?
Some review say the lens is sharp and some review say the lens is soft compared to 85mm f1.4D - Any experience on your part?

Thanks

Re: Anyone has experience with a Nikkor DC lens?

I don't have the 105DC but I do have the 135 DC and the 85 1.4. DC takes a bit of getting used to and I don't use it that often. The Bokeh on the 135 is excellent but certainly no better than the 85 1.4 which is pretty much as good as it gets. The 85 1.8 which I had until recently has good Bokeh as well but it's a step down from either lens.

What you get with the DC is more control of the depth of focus so you can increase blur for a background or foreground over a normal lens at the same aperture or even over do it and get an in camera soft focus. When set at the optimum you get a very sharp lens which will probably give most lenses a run for their money including the 85 1.4 With strobes it performs in the same way but of course in a studio you can have a "ready blurred" background. The 85 1.4 and 105 F2 have almost identical DOF wide open with the 105 having marginally better subject seperation.

They are complimentary lenses and the 135 is a very useful focal length on FX again. I do have a 105 lens but it's the 2.8 macro which very occasionally gets an outing for portraits but it's not my lens of choice so sharpness can't be an issue with either of the other 2 and I doubt the 105 has an issues either.

Re: Anyone has experience with a Nikkor DC lens?

Thanks vinny. Can I ask a few more questions?

1) My eventual goal is to replace my 85mm f1.8D with the 85mm f1.4D (I am in no rush to do this as I am VERY happy with my 1.8D), so the question is aside from being a neat lens to have would you think it is worth getting a DC if you plan to have or have the 85mm f1.4D? (the difference in focal length is not large enough to be an issue with me)

2) I 100% agree with you about the in studio point, but sometimes I will use my strobes indoors say by a staircase, a doorway or even by the window. Would the DC lens be of any use, or of great use, in situations like these? As when I use my strobes I can dialing my aperture to f4, f5.6, f8 and such depending on how bright I want the shot, yet I would like the room to be out of focus. (Ask because I see that the DC lens goes from F5.6 to R5.6 on the collar for the Front and Rear defocus control)

3) Lastly have you used this lens to shoot wedding and other events outdoor in late summer or early fall? How does it perform outdoors (flasre etc)? Does the bokeh/blur look natural or does it look like you over used the blur feature in PS?

Thank you
Much much much appreciated
