Question Buy a 20D or 5D or wait for the new one at the end of February ?

A difficult decision !

About to sell my Canon 10D and Buy either a 20D or 5D, but should I wait for the new one that is sure to be on show at end of febuary at http://www.focus-on-imaging.co.uk/ at the NEC ?

20D is a bargain with the £100 offer that expires at end of January, certainly affordable, and time is runing out

5D is too expensive for me really, not sure I need full frame as I would need to buy a longer lens. do like the thought of Full Frame though...

Any guesses as to price of 20D replacement anyone ?

I guess similar to Nikon D200 (£1299 ish ) so about £1000 to £1100 for 20D replacement?

Just dont know what Canon to buy... a 20D for a good price or wait and I might find the repacement is 40% more than 20D and a waiting list...

Mark.

well, the 5d is plumeting in price all the time, i suspect it will settle at around the £1600-1500 mark...
the 20d offer is a little misleading in places though I did notice jacobs cameras selling it £599 with cashback, not bad price. as far as the new release, only time will tell.

My friend bought a 20D within the last week. He concluded that the current 20D does everything he would need and the price was now affordable. Me letting him use mine now and again tempted him too.

I must be biased as I have a 20D but I can honestly say I am not even considering a replacement. Maybe if I used a high end camera I might see some faults in the 20D but for what I need it does the job and does it well.

Now the price has fallen I doubt you would lose too much if you bought a 20D for now and sold it on once the new model has been out a while.

I think you need to be careful before choosing the 5D, or any 1:1 format camera. There's an obvious advantage in wide angle use, but a disadvantage in tele lens use in that you'll just end up cropping more image with the same lens unless you invest in the really long and very expensive lenses to take advantage of the full frame format.

The 20D replacement is likely to have a larger LCD screen, which is the way everyone is going, and a few more pixels. The 20D with 8 mill pixels and it's current impressive spec isn't going to become suddenly obsolete with the introduction of the new model, so if you can pick one up at the right price, it has to be worth thinking about?

You have convinced me

A 400mm or 500mm f4 IS Canon is out of the question... and thats what I would need to get similar range to my 70-200 2.8 IS with 1.4x convertor if I went full frame.

Just got to find a good price on a UK 20D that's in stock, as the end of the month is approaching fast.

Makes more sense to buy a 20D, drool over the new model if its on display in February at the NEC, then wander over to the Jacobs stand and spend the price difference between the bargain 20D and new model towards another lens.

I do like the look of the 24-105 f4 L IS

looks like my 10D will be on ebay tomorrow night.

Thanks !

Mark.

I feel responsible now!

Seriously, I think you're doing the right thing, apart from anything else, full frame sensors are really demanding of lens quality, showing up in the form of deterioration and sometimes vignetting at the frame edges, so you really need to buy top quality glass.

I fancy the 24-105L IS too, but it will have to wait a while.

To be honest, even with what everyone else is saying, I'd wait and see what Canon come up with for the replacement.

It's most likely that it'll just be a few extra megapixels, a larger screen and a few other minor updates... BUT there could be something else added that'd be very usefull to you, we just don't know untill we see the specs.

When it comes down to it you arn't going to lose anything by waiting just a month or so, and there will still be 20d's around at possibly an even better price if you think the new camera dosn't warrent the extra money.

Sonsey has a good point and it isn't as though you'll see a huge leap in quality from the 10D to the 20D.

I've got my fingers crossed that the new model will be a big improvement on the 20d promting lots of people to upgrade so I can try and pick up a 20d on the cheap Although I can't even afford a 10d at the mo let alone any decent glass

If you're willing to wait till Focus on Imaging why not wait another year and buy the model after that or another year after that If you want a camera to take photographs buy it now and get shooting, think of the shots you are missing.

Spot on, Steep I could have saved a ton or two by waiting instead of buying my 20d last July. I look at it as an extra six months of enjoyable photography.

Only problem is lots of 20D users would have paid way more than current prices & will be in for a shock when they start asking silly money

From a Nikon perspective I look at the D200 & although I would love to own the kit, I know in reality my shot's will be no better than with my D70, based on my skill level. Now if I do buy one in the future, I will delete this post

I've always gone for the best I can afford - in reality that has meant buying the best, whether I could afford it or not.
Many days in my 20's were spent living on Weetabix and Cheese-on-beans-on-toast for months on end, just so I could polish my new Nikon F3 bodies.

We should all suffer for our art and I need to eat less anyway...

Normally I'd agree with this... but he wouldn't be waiting a year, not even close... we're talking next month here, and Mark's allready got a 10d so he isn't missing much!
