Buying D80, thanks for the help!

Hello Folks,

I get to leave Jamaica and go to Atlanta, GA on the company's nickel.

While there, having read all your comments on the various cameras and lenses, I'm going to trade my Casio Exilim S600 in for a Nikon D80 with the 18-135 lens.
Thanks for all the advice you all have, it's helped me immensley in making a decision on my first real camera.

Anybody know if it's possible to repair the Exilim...the motor that drives the zoom must have went because it just clicks and stutters, but won't move the lens.

The D80 with 18-135 lense is $1300 at Circuit City, very close to the hotel I will be staying at in Atlanta. Price seems reasonable enough, and distance matters a lot when you are stumping around in a walking cast.

I figure I can learn to use the Nikon with that lens, see how I make out, and add to my lense collection as I can afford, and as I learn. I don't learn all that fast, so it gives me time to save the money.

In Jamaica, mon, you doan wan be importin nuttin ere. Cost you an arm and de uttah leg.

Casios get a lens error if they get turned on in the case which can sometimes cause this. How old is the Casio? It may get fixed under warranty. You can probably take it into any dealer who will send it off for an estimate.

Thanks for the idea Vinny.
It's not a lens error though. I've had that happen before.
If it was an older car, i would say the tranny just packed it in. That kind of thing.
It's almost 2 years old and has had a LOTof images pumped through it, so it doesn't really owe me anything.
I thought I might try to find a camera place while I'm in Atlanta and see if there's a teck type who wants to open it up and see if he can do anything.
I'm trying to convince my boss to cough up for a new EX-Z1000, since it got used at work a lot. I wonder if I can take my 2 gig card out of the Ex-Z600 and put it in the new one if i got one.
