I agree. I did say (maybe a tough shot for any camera). I will say this though - my film Rebel took great shots in the snow with no underexposing at all, something my photography class instructor was surprised by. Clouds against a bright sky -good again! The film Rebel, in my opinion, was such an excellent camera.

I did a search on the XTi on Amazon.com and out of 90 reviews, 11 mention having dark pictures and under exposure issues. But many said, "best pictures I've ever seen in my life". I just don't understand it but 11 out of 90 with the same problem is statistically significant. I copied this info to Canon and they said sent the camera to a service center, but unless they made a batch of bad cameras, I don't think the camera is it. The magic number seems to be +2/3. Overexpose by 2/3 if not using flash, add 2/3 to the flash if using flash.

I will say this. I love the feel and layout of the camera and it's functionallity. If it weren't for those darn dark pictures!

If your that unhappy with it then I think this is a good idea, what have you got to lose (apart from the use of your camera for a couple of weeks), at least you'll know for sure!...

...If it come's back with the same issue then you can get to work learning to adjust to how a digital SLR differ's from how a film SLR does things without that niggling thought that it could be a fault with the camera.

Were you processing your film shots yourself?

If not then it could be that the people who were took the touble to compensate for any underexposure during the processing. Just a thought

think that is why,.

when you were saying rebel I thought your meant the digital rebel 300d,. yes the magic of film was / is wider lattitude for incorrect exposures which the high street processing lab fixes so your prints generally look ok,.

All good points. Yes, I did generally used a high end photo shop which would compensate when I purposely pushed a few stops.

And it's not that I don't know how to tweak the camera to get better pictures or that I don't know how to apply post photo processing to correct - I just don't see how so many "amateurs" can claim to get perfect pictures using auto unless our cameras are different. I don't consider myself a pro, but definitely no amateur. Maybe they just don't know what a good picture is...

Re: Canon 350D vs 400D / Rebel XTi

Hi guys!

I have not posted for a while and don't know if anyone will read this but I wanted to put this one to bed after all this time.

After taking thousands of pictures, I am in love with this camera! It still has the issues I have reported - mainly underexposing in certain lighting conditions and not focusing well in certain conditions. I have learned how to compensate for both and can pretty accurately predict when they will occur.

I have also purchased my first "L" lens, a 17-40 F4.0 and have found it to be a bit sharper and better color than the kit lenses. Now I want the 24-105 L - I am hooked on "L" and oh, are they expensive!

The last point is that today I loaded a firmware upgrade version 1.0.5 which is supposed to fix only 3 minor issues, however, some posters are noting that it is correcting the underexposing issue but Canon is not admitting it. After only a few test shots tonight, I think this may be true, but if not, I still can compensate!

Thanks to all the posters who have listened and offered advice.

Rex

That is really good news Rex. Are you going to show us some of your pictures? We've seen the failures - it's only right that we see the successes too!
