Canon 40D

Two days ago I posted a question about the FujiFilm S5 being used exclusively for macro photography... I received several responses and good suggestions concerning the lens that I would need... the consensus was that the lens is more critical than the camera... Someone said that I should choose a camera with a good sensor.... How do you feel about the Canon D40 and the Sigma 105mm macro lens?

Excellent! The only caveat with the Sigma 105 macro is that the front section of the lens extends while focusing, which some people don't like. Otherwise it is very good.

The desirable rival is the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro, but that is a lot more expensive.

Another to consider if you're into insect shots is the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 macro, which gives the same magnification from a little further away. It is, however, rather larger and heavier.

Can I ask: what sort of macro photography? Outside or studio? If the latter I'd definitely think D200/40D and if the former I might still be tempted by the S5 (tho', ironically, I turned away from the S5 towards the 40D but that was because it suits my needs better to have Canon)

Edit: I have the Sigma 105mm and have found it excellent. Concensus seems to be that it and Canon are pretty similar in image quality but the Canon build is better

If macro is going to be a prime use, I think the liveview facility of the Canon 40d would be a big advantage.

Ahh, then I'd definitely recommend 40D - no particular advantage to the S5 improved dynamic range (as you can control the lighting) and, as Graham says, the Liveview on the LCD would be a major benefit. Again there's no benefit to a longer reach lens, so reckon the 100/105 mm would suit well (closer, using a 50mm, and you may find equipment is blocking the light)

I have the 40D and 100mm macro. A very good combination especially since the front element doesn't move. Also the liveview saves you ricking your neck.

I think you will not go wrong with the Canon 40d and the canon 10 mm macro lens. I have the same equipment. If you look in my gallery there is a picture of a robin and also a hard drive head. Both of these were taken with that camera lens combination.

I'm planning to buy Canon 40d with it's 100mm macro lens - for macro. I think it's a great choice. And I really like macro - check my website.

I don't think that live view could be useful for macro but I count it in plus that it's there.

it's just useful for any situation where it's difficult to get your eye to the viewfinder.

Macro, insects, outdoors, summer coming, OMG, please people have pity, you will melt the famous Silky resolve and he will HAVE to put down his tin whistle and buy a 40D.

I do not agree with that statement. It is very useful if you cannot get your eye easily to the viewfinder or if you use a table top set-up and a remote release. The ability to magnify the image on the screen helps a lot with critical manual focusing for static objects.

40D live veiw is fantastic. Don't forget it's a huge screen compared with most camera's.

For Macro it certainly allows you to better compose your shot before taking the picture.

As Anthraquinone has said it's not always easy to get your eye to the veiwfinder, I personaly don't have a bendy neck.

I would say about the 40D, Don't hesitate to buy one it's a fantastic camera. I have no experience of Nikons so can't coment on them. I do however think the 40D will be more than I need as a camera.

Don't forget thats there's Canon cashback on the 40D at the moment so it makes quite a bargain
