Re: Canon 40D vs Nikon D200
As neither are entry-level cameras, I don't think they are going to go head-to-head. They are both aimed at the people who are upgrading, so will probably have lots of the compatible kit anyway and that makes it unlikely that either 'side' will jump ship.
Also the 40D is a lot younger than the D200, so maybe we should wait until the D300 is announced before we start comparing them. The 40D does seem to be a step forward for any Canon owner, and looking at the specs and price, it looks pretty good. AJ Purdy have now got the D200 at £799......

Nope - just wait till the Nikon announcement on 24th August; then we'll see what Canon is going up against.

Re: Canon 40D vs Nikon D200
The truth is as Dabhand says. I'm not going to change with all the kit I've got. I'm just in the process of negotiating a trade in price with the supplier of my 30D
The only b****r about it is the battery grip isn't compatible.

Re: Canon 40D vs Nikon D200
Thought it was interesting what some site was suggesting: that the 40D has been ready to go since Feb/March, just that Canon thought it didn't stand out enough and were surprised at the success of the D40/80.
So, yes, I'm sure the 40D will impact some D200 sales but with the rumoured release of new Nikon models......... |

Re: Canon 40D vs Nikon D200
Have to say I'm looking at upgrading my 20D for the 40D, the 30D just wasn't a big enough improvement for me, but shooting mainly sports, the fps rate of 6.5 plus the other improvements listed are selling the 40D to me. But I do agree that once you've got all the lenses etc for a brand it's unlikely you will move.

Re: Canon 40D vs Nikon D200
Brand loyalty is a very strong binder. Once a photographer has more than one lens and possibly one or two other accessories then for the majority they stay with that manufacturer. Many times you will see something from another maker that is technically better or offers you that perfect feature that you wished your own brand would introduce on their next model, but when it doesn't happen few will actually jump ship and go over to the competition, simply because the cost (including likely loss on selling your own equipment) and hassle are just to restrictive on the whole.
Then there is always the issue of this year it may be your make that offers the best match for you but come next year it could be the competition. It does swing from make to make and year to year. Try to keep following that with your own equipment soon becomes a futile exercise. Just my 2p's worth

Re: Canon 40D vs Nikon D200
My daughter is always borrowing my Canon 350 D and kept saying why don't I let her have my complete outfit for next to nothing when the Nikon 200 was released.I had an e-mail from her last week pressing for me to get the 40D. Kids!!.
Does anyone know the body dimensions of the 40D please. Brian |
